Mammography Screening Guidelines

Recently, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force changed its guidelines for mammography and is no longer recommending routine screening for women between the ages of 40 and 49. There has been controversy in the medical community over these recommendations, which differ from the recommendations of the American Cancer Society.

EmblemHealth and its companies (GHI, GHI HMO and HIP) will continue to pay for routine mammography screenings using the American Cancer Society guidelines below:

  • Breast Mammogram: Yearly Mammograms are recommended for women starting at age 40
  • Breast Exam, Clinical: Every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women age 40 and over.
