Date Issued: 7/5/2016

CPT 95937 (neuromuscular junction testing [repetitive stimulation, paired stimuli] each nerve, any one method) is used for Neuromuscular Junction Testing and should not be used for Train of Four (TOF) Monitoring.

As defined by the AMA code descriptor and based on criteria set forth by CMS, the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM), CPT code 95937 is used for neuromuscular junction testing and is reported when repetitive stimulation studies are used to identify and differentiate known or suspected disorders of the NMJ such as myasthenia gravis or myasthenic syndromes as well as botulinum toxicity and should not be used for TOF monitoring.

Neuromuscular junction testing must not be billed for any diagnostic test or procedure that does not meet the CPT definition of code 95937 (neuromuscular junction testing [repetitive stimulation, paired stimuli] each nerve, any one method). Hence, billing this code for anything other than what it is intended for will be denied.
