Collaboration is King

CollaborationWhen a patient's team of healthcare professionals works in a spirit of collaboration, we see the best outcomes. A successful treatment plan supports sharing information between all staff involved in the patient's care; this is true for both physical and mental conditions.

An open exchange of information strengthens the quality of care your patients receive from their whole healthcare team. For that reason, EmblemHealth strongly encourages behavioral health providers to obtain a release from their patients allowing the behavioral health provider to forward information relevant to the member's medical care to the primary care physician. This is especially important as medical providers prescribe the majority of psychotropic medications.

Supporting the important role you play in treating EmblemHealth members with behavioral health issues, we provide several resources to help you, including:

  • Clinical Practice Guidelines addressing a host of behavioral health disorders
  • Anti-Depressant Medication Dosing Guidelines
  • Medical Professional Consultation Line — Our Behavioral Health vendor, ValueOptions®, has a dedicated phone line to assist you in meeting the needs of your patients. You can reach them at 1-877-241-5575 from 9 am–5 pm, Monday through Friday.

As with any prescription medication and particularly with psychotropic medications, you should confirm that your patient understands how to take their medication and explain possible side effects, especially with anti-depressants and attention deficit disorder medications. Encourage your patient to attend periodic follow-up visits to confirm he/she is adhering to the treatment plan and to monitor medication effectiveness.

ValueOptions® has skilled substance abuse specialists. When you diagnose a patient with any form of substance abuse, encourage the patient to schedule a follow up appointment or contact ValueOptions® at the above number.
