Well-Child Preventive ServicesOn February 24, 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued an updated schedule for health services recommended during well-child visits. This handy guide to the screenings, measurements and anticipatory guidance recommended across the entire pediatric spectrum, from the mother’s prenatal visit through the child’s 21st year of life, is a helpful tool.

The full 2014 Recommendations for Pediatric Preventive Health Care schedule includes the following updates:

  • CRAFFT, a recommended six-question screening tool to assess adolescents' use of alcohol and drugs
  • Depression screening at ages 11 through 21
  • Additional cholesterol screening between the ages of 9 and 11 to adhere to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute policy
  • Risk assessment for abnormal hematocrit or hemoglobin levels at 15 and 30 months
  • Screening for HIV between the ages of 16 and 18
  • Routine screening of female adolescents for cervical dysplasia at age 21
  • Screening of newborns for critical congenital heart disease using pulse oximetry between 24 hours of age and leaving the hospital

The AAP also updated policies pertaining to breast-feeding, immunization schedules, lead poisoning prevention and assessments for oral health risk.

Every visit to your office is an opportunity to provide health education and guidance to parents, including information about their child's:

  • Tests, screenings and shots (including the flu)
  • Standard height, weight and head circumference
  • Nutrition and oral hygiene
  • Physical activity and injury prevention
  • Mental and physical development
  • Safety (e.g., car seats, child-proofing home.)
