The FDA has alerted consumers and health care professionals about the Internet sale of a counterfeit (fake) and potentially harmful version of alli® 60 mg capsules (120 count refill kit).
Alli is an over-the-counter weight loss pill. The fake version had the controlled substance sibutramine and didn’t have the correct active ingredient, orlistat. Certain patients should not take sibutramine and it should always be taken under a doctor’s care. Also, sibutramine can interact in harmful ways with other medications a person may be taking.
GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of alli, has found that the counterfeit alli product has been sold on the Web. There is no evidence at this time that it has been sold in other markets, such as retail stores. The differences between the fake and authentic (real) alli are pictured here.
If you believe you have received fake alli, please contact the FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI) by calling 1-800-551-3989 or by visiting the OCI Web site.
