Lactation Consultants Can Help You Learn to Breastfeed

We want you to be successful at breastfeeding. You may need some help getting started, so we encourage you to visit an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Many members are covered for IBCLC visits at home or in the office after delivery.

An IBCLC is a specially trained medical professional who can help you learn to breastfeed and overcome any challenges you may have with it. She can offer suggestions and encouragement to make breastfeeding the special bonding experience it should be. Hospital maternity units have lactation consultants on staff. You can request a visit in your hospital room after you deliver.

To find a participating IBCLC, go to and select Find a Doctor. Then enter your zip code and choose your plan. Select by location with your zip code and adjust mileage range as needed. Click on pregnancy/prenatal/postpartum under Select Specialty. Then check Certified Lactation Consultant.

To request a home or office visit, please call Healthy Beginnings PATH at 1-888-447-0337 with the name and phone number of the professionally licensed IBCLC you would like to see. We can make arrangements for the visit and can connect you to one of our maternity nurses for immediate help. If you need help finding a lactation consultant, we can help you find an IBCLC in your area. We are available Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 7 pm, and Friday, 8 am to 6 pm (TTY/TDD: 711).
