Medicaid Doula Pilot Program – Coming in 2019
EmblemHealth will participate in the New York State Doula Pilot Program. A doula, also known as a birth companion, birth coach, or post-birth supporter, is trained to provide physical and emotional support to a mother before, during, and after childbirth.
If you are Medicaid eligible, pregnant and live in selected zip codes in Kings* (Brooklyn) County, doula services will be covered through your Medicaid Managed Care plan.
When the EmblemHealth Doula Pilot Program launches, we will cover the following services provided by a doula in our network:
- Up to and including four prenatal visits.
- Support during labor and delivery.
- Up to and including four postpartum visits.
How can a doula help me?
Before you give birth, a doula can help you design a labor plan, give you information on, or go to, birth classes with you, educate you about the birth experience, and go to doctor visits with you.
During labor and delivery, a doula can help guide you on comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, movement, positioning, and comforting touch. A doula will work with you and your doctor and there is no cost to you.
After you have your baby, a doula can help you understand your baby’s motions and sounds, suggest ways to soothe your child, and support your choice of feeding method.
Doula services do not replace the medical care provided by an obstetrician or other medical professional.
To learn more about the Doula Pilot Program, call Customer Service at 855-283-2146 (TTY: 711). Our hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
* The Doula Pilot Program does not include the following zip codes in Kings County: 11207, 11212, and 11233.
