Chest X-Rays for Lung Cancer Screening

Effective June 26, 2018, in accordance with the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Radiology, chest X-rays (CPT codes 71045 – 71048) are not recommended for lung cancer screening in asymptomatic patients since they do not reduce mortality.

Claims for a chest x-ray for service after June, 26, 2018, will be denied if the only diagnosis on the claim is for lung cancer screening (ICD-10 code Z12.2) or nicotine use/dependence (ICD-10 codes F17.200-F17.203, F17.210-F17.213, F17.220-F17.223, F17.290-F17.293, Z72.0, and Z87.891).

CPT codes 71045, 71046, 71047, and 71048 will be denied if the only diagnosis on the claim is for lung cancer screening or nicotine use/dependence.

71045 – Radiologic examination, chest; single view

71046 – Radiologic examination, chest; 2 views

71047 – Radiologic examination, chest; 3 views

71048 – Radiologic examination, chest; 4 or more views
