Today, EmblemHealth commemorates World AIDS Day #WAD2015 and encourages everyone to learn about human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
The theme for this year’s World AIDS Day #WAD2015 is The Time to Act Is Now. According to the U.S. Office of National AIDS Policy, “This year, we will celebrate the tremendous progress made to expand access to HIV prevention, treatment, and care services, and focus on the potential to achieve sustainable epidemic control and end AIDS as a public health threat.”
New York State recently reported tremendous HIV prevention progress — zero HIV infections have been passed from mother to child for an entire year. “It is a marked turnaround from two decades ago, when New York was one of the leaders in maternal transmission rates. In 1990, almost 1,900 HIV-positive women in the state gave birth, with an estimated 450 to 700 of their babies being infected. By 2010, only 500 HIV-positive women gave birth with just three of their infants having HIV,” reported Politico.
In addition, New York State Medicaid Managed Care has expanded its coverage for HIV testing. Effective today, it will begin reimbursement for an HIV-1/2 immunoassay which is capable of detecting HIV-1 antigen(s) and HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies in an office setting.
