Starting Oct. 1, 2020, EmblemHealth will no longer cover the use of barium enemas (colon x-rays) for colon cancer screening. This follows the 2018 American Cancer Society recommendation based on clinical evidence, studies, current screening options, and colorectal cancer risks.
EmblemHealth covers other recommended options for colon cancer screening. Remember, annual screenings after the age of 50 are covered 100% by health plans as a preventive service. Refer to our preventive services list for details and guidelines.
