Effective June 26, 2018, an abdominal ultrasound examination (CPT Codes 76700-76705) for a diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis (ICD-10 codes B27-B27.99) should not be performed to assess splenic enlargement due to variability of spleen size and shape in healthy individuals and is not required to manage infectious mononucleosis.
This change is based on a recommendation by the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians.Claims with a service date for abdominal ultrasound after June 26, 2018, will be denied when the only diagnosis is infectious mononucleosis.
