Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives

On April 1, 2014, New York became the fifth state to provide Medicaid fee-for-service reimbursement for long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) when provided to women during their postpartum hospital stay.

In accordance with the fee-for-service policy change, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has encouraged Medicaid Managed Care plans to accommodate and promote coverage of LARC provided to women during their postpartum in-patient hospital stay as well as immediately after receiving an abortion.

Intrauterine devices and implants are safe and effective when inserted immediately postpartum and post-abortion — and eliminate the barrier of an additional visit. Consistent with the NYSDOH change in policy, we urge you to make this service available to our Medicaid members.
