Karen Ignagni on Value-Based Payments

The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) Leadership blog recently featured an op-ed piece on value-based payments by Karen Ignagni, EmblemHealth President and CEO. “Embracing the Future of Payment Reform” speaks to the fundamental shift toward health care payment innovation and the importance of rewarding those for value rather than volume.

She writes, “At EmblemHealth, one of the country’s largest regional plans, more than 60 percent of our HMO membership receives their care from clinicians in value-based payment arrangements — and we will grow that percentage substantially this year.”

Shifting payment models toward a value-based system encourages active disease management, care monitoring, and outreach to those who have the highest risks for serious illness, struggle to access care, or need- preventive treatment. Ignagni notes, “Taken together, these initiatives can improve health, improve care outcomes and reduce costs.”
