How Gratitude Can Change Your Life

Summertime is in full swing and whether you’re enjoying spending time outside around the city or traveling abroad, there’s so much to be grateful for! Yet, how often do you stop to think about gratitude?

If it takes you a while to respond, you might want to consider some of the tips our Neighborhood Care location at Duane Street recommended in their latest Gratitude Workshop.

Once a week over the course of a month, attendees learned how practicing gratitude could change a person’s life, what steps one can take to incorporate gratitude in their life, and the science behind how it works. Here’s a weekly breakdown of the workshop which we encourage you to try at your own pace:

 

Week 1

What is gratitude? It is more than just saying “thank you.” Gratitude is a positive emotion that shows a deeper appreciation for everything around you.

How does gratitude affect your mind, body, and relationships? Practicing gratitude daily may reduce toxic emotions such as frustration, regret, and envy creating a healthier mind and body. Additionally, showing appreciation to the world around you may help in fortifying your relationships.

Is there science behind practicing gratitude? Studies show practicing gratitude gives you the ability to train your brain’s reticular activating system which helps bring focus to what you would like to achieve in life. For example, if you focus on good things and showing gratitude, you will be able to cultivate a more positive outlook daily making you feel more fulfilled and happier.

How do I start practicing gratitude? Start by keeping a journal and writing five unique things you are thankful for every day.

Week 2

Keep writing in your journal but now, try sharing some of the things you’re grateful for with friends and loved ones. Pass it forward and encourage them to share their stories too!

Week 3

There are more ways to cultivate positivity such as meditation, physical activity, eating healthy, listening to uplifting music or random acts of kindness. It is an ongoing journey! Try out one or two of these options this week.

Week 4

Continue to practice gratitude by keeping a journal and verbally expressing what and who you’re grateful for to your friends, loved ones, and even strangers! Try finding other ways to invite positivity into your life by thinking outside the box.
