Restoring sight was once called a miracle, but for ophthalmologist Dr. Amita Vadada it’s become a weekly occurrence. Working from the AdvantageCare Physicians’ Flatiron District Medical Office, Dr. Vadada routinely performs a procedure known as Descemet’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) to help restore sight for patients.

Developed over the past decade, a DSAEK transplant replaces the back layers of the cornea with new, healthy donor tissue. This differs from older “full thickness” transplants which replace the whole cornea. The DSAEK method offers numerous advantages, including a higher success rate, more effective results, and a much shorter recovery period. While full thickness transplants can take a year or more of recovery, DSAEK patients typically have their vision fully restored in one to three months. According to Dr. Vadada, about 60% of the transplants she performs are DSAEK, with the number of full thickness procedures decreasing each year.

Over the last several years, Dr. Vadada has used this new procedure to help restore sight for nearly a hundred patients. “It’s an exciting time to be in the field,” says Dr. Vadada. “I’ve had patients go from being blind in one eye to full 20/20 vision. They’re thrilled with the results and I’m thankful I could help.”
